Emergency Care

Occasionally, some patients experience an injury to the mouth during treatment. Dental emergencies, which generally fall into two categories, can also occur during orthodontic treatment.

Watch our instructional video below for guidance on handling orthodontic emergencies.

Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

At times, orthodontic appliances may break or become loose. If you experience any issues, such as loose bands, brackets, or poking wires, please contact our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment. We prioritize scheduled appointments to ensure efficient care for all patients. In the interim, here are some tips to manage common problems until you can visit us:

  • If a tie wire is causing irritation, you can cover it with beeswax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a blunt object like a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
  • A loose band or bracket can often remain in place until your appointment. Please call Smile Bright Orthodontics during patient hours to arrange for reattachment if necessary.
  • For a broken or poking archwire, you may be able to temporarily resolve it by bending it with a pencil eraser or cutting it with nail clippers. If the issue persists, contact our office during patient hours for further assistance.

Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth

If an accident affects your mouth or teeth, whether during orthodontic treatment or otherwise, quick action is key. Here’s what you should do:

  • Immediate Care: Promptly apply ice to the injured area to reduce swelling and discomfort.
  • Contact Your Dentist: Contact your regular dentist without delay for a thorough evaluation. They may need to take an X-ray to assess the extent of the injury.
  • Emergency Procedures: If a tooth is displaced, knocked out, or fractured, your family dentist is best equipped to provide immediate care. They have the necessary materials and anesthesia to handle such emergencies effectively.
  • Orthodontic Adjustments: Should any orthodontic appliances become dislodged or displaced due to the injury, we will make the necessary adjustments or replacements after you’ve received initial treatment from your dentist.

This approach ensures that you receive timely and appropriate care tailored to the specific needs of your injury. Remember, your dentist is your first point of contact for dental emergencies, ensuring your comfort and well-being throughout the treatment process.
